We are running. Fast. Mostly on our own dime, by choice. It is hard to hit the brakes when the world applauds speed. Try juggling a full-time job, a marriage that needs work, and kids. Some days survival is the only goal.

The schedule is packed, sure. But so is the head. We are stressed. Anxious. Miss the smell of a flower? Probably. The sound of a kid laughing? Maybe. Your spouse? Who has the time? Money looks good on a balance sheet. It does less for your soul.

Busy is a season, not a lifestyle.

I was talking to Jessica Smartt on Focus on the Family with Jim Daly. We discussed Galatians. The Fruit of the Spirit. How do you get that into a living room?

She says tiny habits.

Break the big thing down. Manageable pieces. Small victories. Dieting? Cheat meal allowed. Paying off debt? Buy dinner after the last bill clears. Building family bonds? Celebrate the small steps. Every step.

What should a home actually feel like?

  • Go there when you have no answers.
  • Laugh, even if tears are involved.
  • Rest when the body and spirit are tired.
  • Hunker down when you messed up.

Jessica is blunt about it. “Your family doesn’t have to be perfect to be strong.”
